First awarded in 1992, this award recognizes an individual involved in:
- Legislative, political action, or community service activities that impact public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures, or,
- Treatment, or activities that result in additional support either legislatively or fiscally for the field of cancer research, treatment, prevention or care.
The award presentation may take place at the ASCO Annual Meeting or at another event, based on individual circumstances. The recipient is highlighted in ASCO Daily News and on the ASCO website. The recipient receives support to attend the Annual Meeting or another event.
- Nominees are not required to be an ASCO member.
- Demonstrated exemplary public service that has impacted the public by promoting or creating awareness of cancer, its causes, cures, or treatment.
Candidates for the award are considered by the ASCO Special Awards Selection Committee. The committee considers all nominations as they have been submitted; recommendations are then forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval.
ASCO and Conquer Cancer Foundation Board Members and Officers are not eligible to receive Special Awards from the time they are elected through the end of the calendar year in which their Board terms conclude. ASCO Special Award Selection Committee members are not eligible to receive Special Awards during their service on the Committee.
