MIPS Reporting Deadline Extended to April 30 Due to COVID-19

March 25, 2020

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the deadline for Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) participants to report 2019 data within the Quality Payment Program (QPP) to April 30, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadline had been March 31, 2020.

MIPS-eligible clinicians who have not submitted any 2019 data by April 30, 2020 will qualify for the automatic extreme and uncontrollable circumstances policy and will receive a neutral payment adjustment for the 2021 MIPS payment year.

These changes recognize that data collection and reporting during the COVID-19 emergency may not reflect true levels of performance on measures such as cost, hospital readmissions, and patient experience, and CMS seeks to hold MIPS participants harmless for not submitting data during this period.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has also compiled COVID-19 resources to support clinicians, the cancer care delivery team, and patients with cancer. ASCO in Action will have the latest policy updates related to COVID-19.
