The Annual Meeting Research Award (AMRA), formerly the Resident Travel Award, offers an opportunity for non-oncology medical residents from populations underrepresented in medicine to meet oncologists and to learn more about career options in the field of oncology. Awardees will be expected to attend the ASCO Annual Meeting, either in-person or virtually, where they will have opportunities to hear the latest advances in cancer research, participate in a meet and greet with ASCO members, and have the opportunity to pair with a mentor. While at the Annual Meeting, they will present their research at the Abstract Forum for medical students and residents. The AMRA includes a $1,500 monetary award and complimentary ASCO Annual Meeting registration.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for this award:
- Be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency program required for future training in a cancer related subspecialty (e.g., Internal Medicine considering Medical Oncology, Surgery considering Surgical Oncology, etc.). Residents already enrolled in oncology programs (e.g., Radiation Oncology, etc.) are not eligible.
- Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident;
- Be an ASCO member. Residents may be able to obtain a FREE ASCO membership;
- Have a record of good academic standing; and
- Self-identify as underrepresented in medicine (UIM), as defined according to the Association of American Medical Colleges definition, as “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.” For the purposes of this program, races and ethnicities that have been identified as UIM coincide with those in ASCO Workforce Diversity Strategic Plan, which “include but are not limited to American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander.”
All applications must be submitted in accordance with the requirements and instructions in the RFA. All application materials must be in English and must be submitted through the Application Portal. Paper applications or applications sent by e-mail or fax will not be accepted.
Applications for the 2022 Annual Meeting Research Award will open in December 2021.
