On September 8, three Spanish Practices received Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification during an ASCO Quality Reception at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2017 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
The QOPI Certification Program™ (QCP), which began in 2010, offers specialty three-year certification to outpatient oncology practices demonstrating commitment to quality. The three practices to receive certification are:
- Servicio de Oncología Medica - Hospital Universitario General de Valencia – Valencia, Spain
- Servicio de Oncología Medica - Instituto Valenciano de Oncología – Valencia, Spain
- Servicio de Oncología Medica - Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal – Madrid, Spain
Each of these practices join two other international practices in completing a comprehensive, voluntary assessment of its site against specified standards that are consistent with national guidelines.
The QOPI® Certified seal designates those practices that successfully met the standards and objectives of the QOPI Certification Program, which includes scoring above the threshold on the key QOPI quality measures and evaluating an individual practice's performance in areas that affect patient care and safety. The Certification Standards are derived from chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Dr. Carlos Camps, Dr. Vincente Guillem and Dr. Alfredo Carrato, heads of the oncology departments of the three practices certified, agree in the high importance of this recognition, which will reinforce their commitment with quality in cancer patient care.
Also present at the conference, was Evangelia D. Razis, MD, PhD, of the Contemporary Oncology Team of Athens, Greece, the first international QCP practice, and Carlos Frederico Pinto, MD, MBA, Executive Director of Instituto de Oncologia do Vale in Brazil, the second international practice to be QOPI certified.
The reception was held by ASCO and the Foundation for Excellence and Quality in Oncology (ECO), a nonprofit foundation in Spain, who have launched an effort to expand the QOPI Certification Program to Spain.
