Participate in Online Day of Action for Federal Cancer Research Funding

June 5, 2018

On June 6, 2018, the One Voice Against Cancer Coalition (OVAC) will hold an “Online Day of Action” to advocate for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). During the “Online Day of Action,” members of the cancer community will urge Members of Congress to continue their commitment to the NIH and NCI and provide sustained, robust, and predictable federal funding for cancer research.

While Congress has prioritized federal funding for cancer research over the last several years – including a $3 billion increase in funding to the NIH in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 – NCI’s budget, when adjusted for biomedical inflation, remains lower than before the 2008 recession. Even with bipartisan support for federal funding, Congress continues to deal with budget constraints, which could put another funding increase in jeopardy.

ASCO is encouraging its members to join the “Online Day of Action” and lend their voices to this effort. There are several ways to get involved:

  • Send an email to your representatives in Congress about the importance of federal funding for cancer research through ASCO’s ACT Network.
  • Tweet at your Members of Congress with the hashtag #CancerVoice to encourage them to support an increase in federal funding.
  • Use ASCO’s social media toolkit for tips on how to be successful on social media and sample content to highlight key facts about cancer research, spotlight advances fueled by NCI-funded research, and call on lawmakers to continue their commitment to funding cancer research.
