April 30: Senate Passes the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act; ASCO Sends Letter Supporting the Reagan-Udall Foundation; ASCO Co-sponsors Anticancer Agent Development Workshop 

On April 24, the Senate passed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) by a vote of 95-0. Also, CMS announced changes to the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), including removing the possibility of ‘capped’ bonus payments for 2008 reporting.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Thromboembolic events are increased in patients undergoing lenalidomide-based therapy for multiple myeloma, US and Italian researchers report. Aspirin prophylaxis appears to reduce this risk.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Incidental findings are common among healthy older adults who undergo cardiac multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT), according to a report in the April 14th issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

ASCO and Cancer Foundation Recognize Community Oncology Practices’ Dedication to Clinical Research 

Alexandria, Va. – The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and The ASCO Cancer Foundation are honoring 10 community oncology practices for their efforts to improve care of people with cancer through participation in clinical trials. The Clinical Trials Participation Awards will be presented Sunday, June 1, 2008 at ASCO’s 44th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

 

The ASCO Cancer Foundation Awards $7.6 Million to Further Progress Against Cancer 

Alexandria, Va.—The ASCO Cancer Foundation will award $7.6 million to support clinical and translational research designed to improve cancer prevention, treatment and care. The grants will be awarded to 62 researchers and three community oncology practices at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's 44th Annual Meeting in Chicago, May 31 – June 3.
