Medicare & Quality Care
|
ASCO’s first priority is to ensure that people with cancer have access to quality care. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, also called the MMA, contained significant changes to the way Medicare pays for chemotherapy drugs and related administration and supportive care services. While ASCO supports the general aims of the MMA to revise the Medicare payment system to more closely align Medicare payment amounts to the cost of drugs and services, there continues to be inequity in the current reimbursement system. The oncology demonstration projects of 2005 and 2006, implemented by CMS, have attempted to address some aspects of quality care by looking at side effects of chemotherapy and adherence to clinical guidelines respectively. However, those demonstration projects are not permanent. On behalf of the millions of Americans on Medicare who are dealing with cancer, ASCO is working cooperatively with CMS, Congress, and others in the cancer community on legislative or administrative policy solutions to MMA to ensure that high-quality cancer treatment is available to all people dealing with cancer.
