Berwick to Resign as CMS Chief; Obama to Nominate Former Virginia Secretary

Posted November 29, 2011

Donald Berwick, MD, announced last week that he is stepping down as administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services effective Friday, December 2. President Obama indicated that he plans to nominate deputy administrator Marilyn B. Tavenner to the "key administration post." Prior to joining CMS, she served as Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources in the administration of former Governor Tim Kaine.

ASCO thanks Dr. Berwick for his service and looks forward to working with Acting Administrator Tavenner on improving both the access to and the quality of cancer care.
