James L. Abbruzzese, MD, FACP, FASCO, is a professor of medicine and Chairman of the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he also holds the M. G. and Lillie A. Johnson Chair for Cancer Treatment and Research. Dr. Abbruzzese’s primary focus is the study and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Other interests include drug development and evaluation and unknown primary tumors.

Dr. Abbruzzese completed his undergraduate degree in biology from Fairfield University and earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed residency and a year of clinical fellowship in infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. His clinical fellowship in medical oncology took place at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School.
