ASCO Profile and Mission Statement

ASCO promotes and provides for lifelong learning for oncology professionals; cancer research; an improved environment for oncology practice; access to quality cancer care; a global network of oncology expertise; and educated and informed patients with cancer. ASCO is supported by its affiliate organization, the Conquer Cancer Foundation, which funds ground-breaking research and programs that make a tangible difference in the lives of people with cancer.

The ASCO Mission

Conquering cancer though research, education, and promotion of the highest quality patient care.

A world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy.

ASCO’s diverse network of nearly 40,000 oncology professionals recognizes ASCO's dedication to provide the highest-quality resources in education, policy, the pioneering of clinical research and above all, advancing the care for patients with cancer. ASCO is unique in that we are the only organization that encompasses all oncology subspecialties, allowing our members to grow from the professional and personal expertise of their colleagues worldwide and across disciplines. International members make up approximately 30% of the Society’s total membership and represent more than 120 countries. ASCO offers a variety of membership categories designed to fit your career stage and specific needs. For more information on membership categories and benefits, please visit

ASCO is governed by a Board of 19 members including a President, President Elect, Treasurer, Immediate Past President, Chief Executive Officer (non-voting) and 14 Directors. The Society conducts the majority of its business through various committees comprised of ASCO members who volunteer their time and effort to Society programs. Leaders of patient advocacy groups are often active in ASCO committees as well. There are currently 22 committees (plus numerous editorial boards, task forces, panels and working groups) that are managed and supported by ASCO’s full-time staff.
