Tobacco Control

ASCO supports policies that will reduce as much as possible the disease burden that tobacco use causes. Policies should recognize that nicotine is as an addictive substance and should be regulated as such. The Society supports efforts to (1) restrict marketing of tobacco products; (2) enhance public education (with significant funding from the tobacco industry) about the dangers of smoking; (3) raise tobacco excise taxes; (4) control tobacco exports; (5) enhance research efforts on treatment for tobacco-related diseases, as well smoking intervention strategies; and (6) provide financial assistance to tobacco farmers to transition them to the production of other crops.
