March 1: CMS Issues Clarifications on Oncology Demonstration Project
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a series of FAQs that announce important changes and clarifications for the 2006 Oncology Demonstration Project including:
Gynecologic oncologists are eligible to participate in the demonstration. This change is retroactive to January 1, 2006 and carriers will be instructed to adjust claims that are resubmitted.
Consistent with ASCO’s interpretation, the demonstration G-codes may be billed when qualifying evaluation and management services are provided by mid-level providers "incident to" a physician’s service.
CMS plans to post the FAQs on www.cms.hhs.gov. While CMS has answered many questions about the demonstration in this document, there are still several outstanding issues on which ASCO continues to seek clarification; we will provide additional updates as they become available.
Medicare carriers should now be processing demonstration payments. If your practice is experiencing delays or problems with payments, or if you have any questions about this update, please contact ASCO’s Cancer Policy & Clinical Affairs Department at 703-299-1050 or practice@asco.org.
