Cancer patients continue to face shortages of critical therapies for which there are often no acceptable substitutions. Last year, the medical community experienced a record number of shortages and the situation is expected to worsen without action from Congress. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is pleased that U.S. Representatives John Carney [D-DE] and Larry Bucshon [R-IN] have introduced legislation that will begin to address this crisis.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.— Clifford A. Hudis, MD, a renowned leader in practice-changing translational research and clinical care, has been elected President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for a one-year term beginning in June 2013. During his term, he will also serve as an ex-officio member of the Conquer Cancer Foundation Board. Dr. Hudis will take office as President-Elect during ASCO’s 48th Annual Meeting in Chicago in June 2012.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The American Society of Clinical Oncology today issued a detailed prescription for transforming clinical cancer research in the United States and speeding the creation of new therapies for patients. In a new report, Accelerating Progress Against Cancer: ASCO’s Blueprint for Transforming Clinical and Translational Cancer Research, ASCO lays out its vision for transforming clinical and translational research to deliver more effective and personalized cancer therapies faster. The report also articulates recommendations for achieving that vision over the next several years and ASCO’s commitment to enacting the recommendations.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.- The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) today issued an update to its clinical practice guideline on the use of antiemetic medications to prevent vomiting and nausea resulting from treatment with chemotherapy and/or radiation. The new guideline includes comprehensive, stratified recommendations on the use of antiemetics during treatment with chemotherapy drugs that are classified as high, moderate, minimal and low risk for causing vomiting and nausea.

The meeting was called to address the growing burden of these diseases, which are the world’s leading killers and will continue to be without combined efforts of our global leadership and medical communities.

Alexandria, Va. – Increasing the role of nurse practitioners and physicians assistants in an oncology practice is one effective way to address the projected oncology workforce shortage, according to a new ASCO study. Funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the “Study of Collaborative Practice Arrangements” (SPCA), was published today in the Journal of Oncology Practice.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Robert S. Hauser, PharmD, PhD, has been named as the senior director of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Quality Department. Committed to providing oncologists with the necessary resources to ensure that every patient receives the highest level of cancer care, ASCO established the Quality Department in early 2011 to help prepare ASCO’s clinical practice guidelines, lead efforts to assist oncology practices in adopting electronic health records (EHRs) and other health information technology, and expand ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI).

CHICAGO – Today at a press briefing, leaders from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and the American Cancer Society (ACS) announced new efforts to respond to the cancer epidemic occurring in low- and middle-income countries, and called on President Obama and other world leaders to take action at the upcoming United Nations (UN) High-level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), taking place in New York in September.
