ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Five key studies from the 2012 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium will be featured in an embargoed presscast for reporters on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, from 12:00-1:30 PM (EST).  Highlighted studies will focus on the latest improvements being made in the detection and treatment of several genitourinary cancers. The presscast will be moderated by Nicholas Vogelzang, MD, a member of the 2012 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium News Planning Team and Chair of the ASCO Cancer Communications Committee.

During the presscast, which will be held via live teleconference and webinar, researchers will present results from the following five studies:

  • A study that compared the effectiveness of three types of radiation therapy  in treating localized prostate cancer (Ronald Chen, MD, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)
  • A study analyzing the long-term toxicity and cost of treatment for patients treated with surgery or radiation therapy (Jay P. Ciezki, MD, Cleveland Clinic)
  • A trial that examined impact of a novel agent that targets bone in treating advanced prostate cancer patients with bone metastases (Oliver Sartor, MD, Tulane Cancer Center)
  • An analysis of physical activity and prostate gene expression in men with low-risk prostate cancer (June Chan, MD, University of California, San Francisco)
  • A trial examining the effectiveness of a novel type of targeted therapy on overall survival in patients with advanced prostate cancer (Howard I. Scher, MD, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York)

Genitourinary cancers include tumors of the prostate, kidney, bladder and testis, as well as less common cancers, such as those of the penis, ureters and other urinary organs. In 2012, genitourinary cancers are expected to account for 24% of all new cancer diagnoses in the United States and 10% of all cancer deaths.1

This year’s Symposium will take place February 2-4, 2012, at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis in San Francisco and will feature nearly 500 abstracts on the latest research in genitourinary cancers.  On-site facilities for reporters will include a working newsroom and access to leading experts in the field.

Three leading medical specialty societies co-sponsor the three-day, multidisciplinary symposium, including American Society of Clinical Oncology(ASCO), the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO).

Media Registration: To register to attend the meeting or participate in the presscast, visit ASCO's online media headquarters. The deadline to register for the presscast is Friday, January 27.
