ALEXANDRIA, Va. - President Obama’s signature on the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act marks a new era in which the federal government now has sweeping regulatory authority over how tobacco products are manufactured and marketed in the United States. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation of tobacco products should have a significant impact on reducing the widespread death and disease caused by tobacco use.
Cigarettes and other tobacco products are responsible for nearly a third of all cancer deaths and 90 percent of smokers first become addicted as teens, but until now tobacco companies have been free to manufacture and promote cigarettes across the United States with little federal regulation. The new law empowers the FDA to regulate the harmful ingredients in tobacco products, provides clearer warnings about the dangers of tobacco use, and places stricter limits on how tobacco products are advertised.
ASCO, representing more than 27,000 cancer doctors, commends the President, Congress and the public health community for their work in establishing this law and looks forward to its swift implementation.
