ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Robert S. Hauser, PharmD, PhD, has been named as the senior director of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Quality Department. Committed to providing oncologists with the necessary resources to ensure that every patient receives the highest level of cancer care, ASCO established the Quality Department in early 2011 to help prepare ASCO’s clinical practice guidelines, lead efforts to assist oncology practices in adopting electronic health records (EHRs) and other health information technology, and expand ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI).
“Informatics is playing an increasingly large role in cancer care and the demand for real time knowledge is essential to the future of quality care. We are pleased that Dr. Hauser has brought his rich background of experience and knowledge to ASCO,” said Allen S. Lichter, MD, CEO of ASCO. “We look forward to the benefits of his leadership and analytical contributions as we continue to expand and enhance our quality initiatives.”
Dr. Hauser brings to ASCO more than 15 years of health economic and strategy planning services related to clinical trial development, oncology registries, EHR systems, informatics, and business development. Prior to joining ASCO, Dr. Hauser served as Director of Operations and Informatics at the International Oncology Network, where he was responsible for developing strategy for the use of informatics data and providing analytics for Oncology Managed Care Initiatives. He also served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Geriatric Oncology Consortium, Inc., a 501(c) (3) organization focused on age-based disparities in cancer research, education and treatment.
“The rapidly changing environment in oncology practice has created a unique opportunity for ASCO to build upon the foundations of QOPI and other quality initiatives to utilize data from many sources to provide instantaneous clinical information which will improve outcomes and patient care,” said Dr. Hauser. “I am excited to work with the excellent staff and exceptional leadership at ASCO in this endeavor.”
Dr. Hauser lives in Edgewater, Maryland, and received his post-graduate education at the University of Texas in Austin.
