ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The ASCO Cancer Foundation (TACF) today announced the appointment of Nancy Riese Daly, MS, MPH, as the Foundation’s new Executive Director. TACF is the philanthropic arm of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
“We are excited to have Ms. Daly leading The ASCO Cancer Foundation,” said Allen S. Lichter, MD, CEO of ASCO. “Through her extensive clinical oncology experience, we are confident her leadership will continue the Foundation’s work to raise awareness of the need for cancer research funding, improve cancer prevention, support programs that educate physicians, and provide patients with the best, most reliable cancer information.”
Most recently, Ms. Daly served as Director of Grants for TACF for two years. She and her staff redesigned the grant application process – increasing both the number of applications received and the number of grants awarded to investigators. Ms. Daly also implemented a new grant, The Translational Research Professorship (TRP), rounding out the career continuum. For the first time, the Foundation was able to recognize the work of the seasoned professor with a proven track record and commitment to mentoring future cancer researchers. In addition, she and her staff developed an alumni program for past grantees, identifying their current positions, leadership roles and publishing history.
From 2004-2008 she was Director of Cancer Research at ASCO. During this time, Ms. Daly worked with the newly established Cancer Research Committee, which helped develop policies in the area of cancer research funding and clinical trials issues, helped forge relationships with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), oversaw the ASCO Workforce Study, and helped develop criteria for the Clinical Trials Participation Awards.
Before coming to ASCO, Ms. Daly used her 23 years of oncology expertise to develop a government relations program for the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and helped establish relationships with key policymakers on Capitol Hill, at the FDA, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. After 9/11, Ms. Daly was instrumental in creating a nuclear terrorism response task force, which developed training programs for radiation oncologists to respond in the event of a nuclear terrorist attack.
Ms. Daly began her career as a Senior Clinical Nurse at Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. She then became clinical coordinator of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center where she was responsible for the overall clinical operations of the department. Ms. Daly went on to develop phase I clinical trials as the Director of the Chemical Modifier Program at the Joint Center for Radiation Therapy at Harvard Medical School.
Ms. Daly earned her bachelor’s degree from Russell Sage College and her Master’s of Public Health and Nursing degrees at Columbia University. She also received her Advanced Practicing Nurse Degree from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals.
“I am honored to be leading such an outstanding organization,” said Ms. Daly. “I, along with the dedicated staff, volunteers and leadership of The ASCO Cancer Foundation, will continue the organization’s ongoing mission to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer.”
