ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is extending the resources offered through ASCO University™, its online platform that supports the life-long learning needs of oncology professionals, by adding a “Maintenance of Certification” module for breast cancer.

All medical oncologists certified in 1990 or later must renew their certification every 10 years through the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Maintenance of Certification program, as mandated by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Maintenance of Certification promotes life-long learning and knowledge through study, self-assessment and evaluation focusing on enhancement of clinical judgment and skills essential for high quality patient care.

“ASCO University provides vital education resources to oncologists who are looking for board certification, participating in the Maintenance of Certification process, or simply self-assessing or refreshing their knowledge of modern cancer care,” said ASCO President Douglas W. Blayney, MD.

The Web-based module, which includes 25 case-based, multiple-choice questions, covers a wide variety of topics, from epidemiology to diagnosis to survivorship. Answer rationales include links to source materials, such as ASCO-SEP®, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine, and ASCO’s Clinical Practice Guidelines, among others.

Upon completion of the new breast cancer module, users will be able to:

  • Identify and address knowledge and practice gaps toward improved competence in breast cancer.
  • Apply knowledge learned to better identify breast cancer risk factors and recommend effective interventions for individual patients.
  • Demonstrate participation in life-long learning and enhancement of knowledge as required in the ABIM Maintenance of Certification process.

By providing exclusive access to ASCO’s educational products and supportive resources, ASCO University™ helps oncologists meet the requirements of Maintenance of Certification, Continuing Medical Education and licensure. ASCO University™ serves as an educational home for oncology care professionals.

ASCO University™ also offers medical knowledge modules in Cancer Prevention and General Oncology. To learn more about ASCO University™, visit university.asco.org.
