“ASCO applauds President Obama for committing the nation to finding a cure for cancer ‘in our time’. The recovery plan’s new investment in research will help fuel the breakthroughs we need to reduce the toll of cancer on patients and their loved ones. It’s a much-needed boost to research funding after years of flat budgets that have slowed the pace of research in this country."

“However, we also need sustained growth in the national investment in cancer research because finding a cure for cancer will be a marathon not a sprint, and we can only do so much with a short-term infusion of funding. If the funding in the stimulus package is not sustained, then a lot of projects will have been started, but not many will have been completed."

“While defeating cancer will require research to develop better treatments, it will also require making effective therapies accessible and affordable to those in need. We commend President Obama for his pledge to improve access to health care, and stand ready to help his administration accelerate progress against a disease that continues to claim far too many Americans’ lives each year.”
