ALEXANDRIA, Va. – In an effort to improve cancer care in underserved regions of the world, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), in partnership with Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO), today launched a new humanitarian program, the International Cancer Corps (ICC). The ICC will enable member oncologists from ASCO to volunteer their time to teach in medical facilities in developing countries.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) announced today a partnership with U.S. Figure Skating to join the fight against cancer. ASCO is the world’s leading professional organization representing physicians who treat people with cancer. ASCO’s patient web site, Cancer.Net (www.cancer.net), will be the public face of the partnership, and will serve as the title sponsor of 2009 Skate America, Nov. 12-15 in Lake Placid, NY. With this new relationship, the fight against all cancers will become an official cause of U.S. Figure Skating.

SAN FRANCISCO – New studies on the early detection, evaluation and treatment of breast cancer were released today in advance of the 2009 Breast Cancer Symposium. The symposium is being held October 8-10, 2009, at the San Francisco Marriott.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The ASCO Cancer Foundation (TACF) announced today the recipients of the 2009 Breast Cancer Symposium Merit Awards. Twenty-six young scientists from around the globe will be honored for their outstanding contributions to breast cancer research. The awards will be presented at the Symposium, taking place October 8-10 in San Francisco.

These policies seek to serve as a benchmark for providers of adult cancer care and encourage them to evaluate their current standards.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. –The ASCO Cancer Foundation, with the support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), has created the Comparative Effectiveness Research Professorship (CERP) in Breast Cancer. This five-year grant award will provide flexible funding to an outstanding researcher who has made and will continue to make significant contributions in breast cancer research.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – In formal comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) called on CMS to abandon proposed cuts to reimbursement for physicians who provide cancer care to millions of Medicare patients. The cuts would jeopardize access to care for patients nationwide – more than 80 percent of Americans with cancer receive care from local, community-based oncology practices.
