Electronic Health Records (EHR) Lab at the 2007 Annual Meeting

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are becoming essential in the day-to-day practice of oncology. ASCO sponsored its first EHR Lab at the 2007 Annual Meeting to introduce attendees to some of the available EHR technologies.

The vendors selected to present at the lab were carefully evaluated according to criteria developed by the ASCO EHR Workgroup and its consultants. All vendors had to fulfill specific requirements for their products and had to demonstrate core functional EHR elements, as determined by ASCO. Successful implementation of the product in a minimum of five oncology practice sites also was a requirement for inclusion in the lab.

In addition to general lab hours, basic and advanced EHR courses taught by experts were available to attendees. The Basic EHR course provided an overview of the lab, outlined the decision-making process for selecting a product, and identified reasons for using an EHR. The Advanced EHR course allowed participants to take a closer look at budget considerations and project management timelines for implementing an EHR in practice.
