Incentives for e-Prescribing (e-Rx)

General Overview

The federal government has recognized many possible advantages to e-prescribing (e-Rx), including improving patient safety and quality of care, reducing administration overhead, improving formulary adherence, and improving drug surveillance/recall. To boost adoption of e-Rx, the government passed the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) in 2008, which authorizes an incentive program for eligible professionals who are successful electronic prescribers. Most oncologists should be qualified for the incentive program. Details are below.

Incentives for 2010

It is not too late to register for the 2010 incentives; eligible professionals can even start reporting on December 31st, 2010 to qualify. Professionals who participated in 2009 – take note – the qualifications for 2010 are different.

Incentives for 2011

The incentive program substantially changes for 2011. Specifically, there will be Medicare penalties for ALL eligible professionals who do not adopt e-prescribing by June 30th, 2011. Make sure to act appropriately to avoid Medicare payment adjustments.

See Details on Incentives, Who Qualifies, and How Do I Qualify for 2010 / 2011 for more information.
