The federal government has been very aggressive in promoting the incorporation of technology into medicine. Two of their biggest programs are listed below, along with information on their aims, qualifications, and actual payments. Both of these programs are administered through Medicare incentives and penalties.
Meaningful Use of EHRs
$44,000 maximum Medicare incentive with participation from 2011/2012 to 2015/2016
1% Medicare payment reduction in 2015, 5% reduction by 2020
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act authorized billions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments to care givers that demonstrate "meaningful use" of certified health IT products. CMS and ONC are administrating these incentive programs. Most oncologists are eligible for the Medicare incentive payments.

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 authorized a new program that awards incentives to eligible professionals who are successful electronic prescribers (e-prescribers).
