ASCO evidence-based clinical guidance documents include Guidelines, Guideline Updates, Focused Updates, Provisional Clinical Opinions, and Guideline Endorsements. ASCO disseminates this guidance and provides support for implementation in various media.
All evidence-based clinical guidance documents are published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO).Most guidelines are published in JCO in summary format and full guidelines are published on asco.org/guidelines. In addition, data supplements from all evidence-based clinical guidance documents are published on asco.org.
ASCO Clinical Tools and Resources accompany all new evidence-based clinical guidance documents. At a minimum, ASCO produces a Journal of Oncology Practice piece and/or commentary, a PowerPoint slide set, a patient guide (“What to Know”) on cancer.net, and promotes the guidelines in other ASCO media such as ASCO Connection. The ASCO Express emails to all ASCO members announce new Guidelines, Provisional Clinical Opinions, and other guidance documents.
Quality indicator statements are developed for each guideline and may result in quality measures used in ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative
Depending on the guideline, ASCO may:
- Develop Clinical Tools and Resources unique to particular guidelines such as algorithms, flowsheets and other documentation tools, tools for shared decision-making, and other point-of-service purposes.
- Conduct media outreach
Members of the Practice Guidelines Implementation Network (PGIN) act as ambassadors for ASCO Guidelines and Clinical Tools and Resources and use a grassroots approach to inform others about these resources.
ASCO also promotes guideline dissemination and implementation through its Annual Meetings, Disease-specific symposia, and State Affiliates.
Practice Guidelines Implementation Network (PGIN)
ASCO is committed to helping oncology practitioners implement ASCO Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations. ASCO formed the Practice Guidelines Implementation Network (PGIN) to provide perspectives on guideline implementation from community-based oncology, academic medicine, oncology nursing, oncology pharmacy, and practice management. PGIN was formed in late 2008, under the leadership of Edward Balaban, DO.
The PGIN is primarily made up of members of ASCO State Affiliates, ASCO’s Clinical Practice Committee (CPC), Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), and Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA). PGIN functions under the auspices of the ASCO Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee, with support from the Clinical Practice Committee.
The current chair is Michael Danso, MD, member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee (CPGC) and liaison to the CPC.
Current members are listed below. New members are welcome and encouraged. Please contact guidelines@asco.org to learn more and join PGIN.
