Disclosure of Board of Directors Oncology Relationships

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors (including four Board officers) elected by ASCO’s member oncologists. The Chief Executive Officer serves on the Board as well. Elected Board members are cancer physicians and clinical researchers who volunteer their time to ASCO. Board members are not paid for their service, although their institutions receive stipends to partially cover the time and administrative resources dedicated to ASCO.

ASCO’s financial and other disclosures are governed by its own Conflict of Interest Policy (see ASCO Conflict of Interest Policy Summary and ASCO Policies for Independence from Funding Sources), the Council of Medical Specialty Societies’ CMSS Code for Interactions with Companies, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Standards. Consistent with the CMSS Code (Article IV, Section 2.4), ASCO here discloses the financial and uncompensated relationships between the Board of Directors and companies with a commercial interest in the science or practice of oncology.

Below is a link to the information disclosed by members of ASCO's Board of Directors as of March 2011. Following are explanatory notes:
  • Under ASCO policy, Board members disclose compensated and uncompensated relationships with companies having a commercial interest in the science or practice of oncology. Non-profit organizations, educational organizations, governmental organizations, publishers, physician practices, health care providers, health insurers, and non-medical organizations are not included in this disclosure.

  • Board members disclose their own relationships and those of their immediate family members.

  • Financial relationships at any level are disclosed. There is no “minimum value” threshold for disclosure.

  • ASCO uses the information disclosed to identify and manage any potential conflicts of interest that may arise in carrying out the responsibilities of the Board of Directors.

  • The disclosure information at this link is updated annually.

  • From time to time, Board members may publish articles in ASCO journals or plan or present at ASCO scientific and educational meetings. In these situations, Board members disclose relationships that are relevant to the subject matter of the article or presentation. The information may be different from the overall disclosure they are required to make as Board members.
  • Information at this link may be different from information published by the Board members' institutions, journals, other professional organizations, governmental agencies, companies, disclosure compilation websites, and other ASCO publications. This is because of variation in the disclosure requests. Readers should keep in mind that the information disclosed here may differ from other publicly available disclosure reports because:
    • ASCO Board disclosures are specific to the field of oncology, while other reports may include a different set of financial and other relationships.
    • ASCO Board disclosures are not specific to a particular presentation, manuscript or abstract, as is required for CME activities and for most scientific journals.
    • ASCO Board disclosures listed include financial relationships from the first dollar, while other reports may reflect a de minimis threshold for disclosure.
    • ASCO Board disclosures reflect the name of the entity at the time the Board member provided services or received compensation. Other reports may reflect mergers, acquisition, and other corporate restructuring.
    • ASCO Board disclosures show which research funding goes to the researcher’s institution.
    • ASCO Board disclosures may cover a different time period than other reports.
  • Employment/Leadership Positions = positions held at the time of disclosure. These include both full- and part-time relationships, whether compensated or uncompensated. This does not include relationships with academic institutions, physician practices, and non-profit organizations. Under ASCO policy, the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President may not hold compensated Employment/Leadership positions with oncology companies that have a commercial interest in the science of or practice of oncology.

  • Consultant/Advisory Roles = roles held or payments received during the two years leading up to the time of disclosure. Compensated and uncompensated relationships are included. Consulting and advisory roles with non-profit groups are not included. Under ASCO policy, the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President may not hold compensated Employment/Leadership positions, so any relationship held by one of these individuals is from before he or she became ASCO President-Elect, and is not currently held.

  • Stock Ownership = stock held at the time of disclosure. Stocks in mutual funds, blind trusts, or other holdings that are not controlled by the individual or an immediate family member are not included.

  • Honoraria = honoraria to recognize activities carried out or payments received during the two years leading up to the time of disclosure. Activities may include speeches, presentations, appearances, and the like. If a Board member receives an honorarium and donates it to charity, the honorarium is disclosed. If a Board member declines an honorarium and it is paid directly to charity, the honorarium is not included. Honoraria from accredited CME providers are not included. Under ASCO policy, the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President may not accept honoraria, so any honoraria disclosed by one of these individual is from before he or she became ASCO President-Elect.

  • Research Funding Paid to Individual = research funding agreements in place or funding received by the individual Board member directly during the two years leading up to the time of disclosure. Research funding from non-profit organizations and governmental entities is not included.

  • Research Funding Paid to Institution = situations where the individual Board member receives no funds directly. Research funding goes to an institution, research consortium, practice group, or other entity. The individual may serve as principal investigator (PI) for the research study, including a local or site PI, or may be a member of a steering committee for a study that does not have a PI. In some cases the individual may not be directly involved in the research study at all, but may play a regulatory or supervisory role for the research site. Research funding from non-profit organizations and governmental entities is not included.

  • Expert Testimony = expert testimony provided on behalf of a company with a commercial interest in oncology during the two years leading up to the time of disclosure, as well as payment received during that time for prior testimony. Compensated and uncompensated relationships are included. Under ASCO policy, the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President may not be compensated for expert testimony, so any compensated relationships disclosed by one of these individual is from before he or she became ASCO President-Elect.

  • Other Remuneration = payment for travel, gifts, or other in-kind payments received during the two years leading up to the time of disclosure. Payment or reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses in connection with uncompensated services is not included. Under ASCO policy, the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President may not accept other remuneration, so any relationships disclosed by one of these individual is from before he or she became ASCO President-Elect.
