Special Awards


The ASCO Special Awards are intended to recognize and encourage individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to ASCO, the practice of clinical oncology, and cancer patients. Each of these individuals were honored at ASCO’s 2009 Annual Meeting. Read the press release for more details on their outstanding achievements.

David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award

First presented in 1970, recognizes outstanding contributions to cancer research, diagnosis and/or treatment. A lecture is given during the opening session of the Annual Meeting.

Science of Oncology Award

First presented in 2005, recognizes outstanding contributions to basic or translational research in cancer. A lecture is given at the beginning of the plenary session at the Annual Meeting.

American Cancer Society Award

First presented in 1993, recognizes significant contributions to cancer prevention and control research or practice. A lecture is given during the Annual Meeting.

B. J. Kennedy Award and Lecture for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology

Created in 2007 in honor of B. J. Kennedy, MD, recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the elderly, and in bringing an understanding of the geriatric oncology to fellows and junior faculty.

Pediatric Oncology Award

First presented in 2002, was created to recognize an outstanding pediatric oncologist who has demonstrated outstanding leadership or achievement in the field. A lecture is given during the Annual Meeting.

Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award

Was created in 2007 to recognize an active clinical or translational researcher with a distinguished record of accomplishments in advancing the field of breast cancer and with exceptional mentoring abilities. A lecture is given during the Breast Cancer Symposium.

Distinguished Achievement Award

Created in 2009, this award recognizes leadership or mentorship by a scientist, practitioner or researcher in any subspecialty of oncology that has benefited ASCO members and/or their patients.

Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement

Created in 1992, recognizes clinical, translational and laboratory-based scientists, practitioners and researchers in all subspecialties of oncology for major clinical or scientific contributions to the field of oncology, and outstanding, long-term service to ASCO.

Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Leadership

First given in 2002, recognizes a person or persons who have provided extraordinary broad-based leadership in the field of oncology that benefits ASCO members and their patients.

Partners in Progress Award

Created in 2003, recognizes a person involved in patient advocacy activities that impact public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures, or treatment, or activities that result in additional support both legislatively and fiscally for the field of clinical research and community service.

Public Service Award

First given in 1992, recognizes a person involved in legislative, political action and community service activities that impact public awareness about cancer, its causes, cures, or treatment, or activities that result in additional support both legislatively and fiscally for the field of cancer clinical research and community service.

Special Recognition Award

Created in 1992, recognizes a person or persons who have major impact in areas of clinical oncology, cancer research, clinical trials, reimbursement and patient advocacy activities. The award recognizes outstanding, long-term service to ASCO and to clinical oncology.

Statesman Award

Created in 2007, recognizes ASCO members? voluntary efforts that benefit ASCO, the specialty of oncology, and, most importantly, the patients whom we serve.
