** MEDIA ALERT **
Presscast to Release Research News from 2008 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium
February 12, 2008 1:00 PM (EST)

WHAT:

Presscast (press briefing via live webcast) to release new research being presented at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium. The symposium, being held February 14-16 in San Francisco, will bring together more than 1,500 participants and feature nearly 500 abstracts. During the presscast, study authors will present findings from the following studies:

  • A study evaluating the causes of death among older men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer who did not undergo treatment for the disease, to determine the potential for “watchful waiting” versus active treatment

  • A study to assess the effectiveness of radiation therapy in men whose PSA levels continued to rise after receiving radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer

  • A study exploring the heart-related side effects (cardiotoxicity) of the targeted therapy sunitinib in patients with kidney cancer or gastrointestinal stromal tumors

  • A study examining the reasons for the underuse of an equally effective and less invasive procedure for removing small kidney tumors, compared to total removal of the kidney (procedures are comparable to lumpectomy versus mastectomy in breast cancer)

The full meeting program can be accessed at www.asco.org/GUpresskit08, and is being co-sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) and the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO).

Expanding on The Prostate Cancer Symposium, this year’s symposium also offers educational sessions focused on cancers of the testis, bladder and kidney. The 2008 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium will provide a forum for the presentation and peer review of current and emerging scientific and therapeutic advances in all genitourinary cancers.
