ASCO Announces 2008 Special Award Recipients

ASCO is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2008 Special Awards, in recognition of their achievements in clinical science, patient care, and oncology advocacy. These seven distinguished leaders will be recognized throughout the 2008 ASCO Annual Meeting.

The recipients were chosen by the Special Awards Selection Committee for their outstanding contributions to cancer care. Gabriel N. Hortobagyi, MD, Chair of the Committee and ASCO’s Immediate Past President, explained that the awards provide a unique opportunity for ASCO to acknowledge the accomplishments and important efforts of members of the oncology community.

“Special Awards are given each year to recognize the best and the brightest among us, those that provide the skills and leadership to move cancer care, research, education, and prevention forward,” he said. “The list of candidates we reviewed and discussed was stellar,” Dr. Hortobagyi said. “Each candidate’s story is inspiring, and the opportunity to recognize those among us who provided leadership and example to all of us is inspirational.”

Although each award has its own set of specific criteria, leading candidates are those who tout major accomplishments in their field, are broadly respected and admired for their professional achievements and personal attributes, develop good rapport with fellow scientists, and exhibit outstanding leadership qualities. More specifically, the Committee also looks at each candidate’s record of publications, recognition by peers, invitations to lecture, implementation of successful programs, mentorship, and reputation for clinical excellence.
