ASCO is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 election. The President-Elect and members of the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee are dedicated to advancing the ASCO mission and will work to promote policies that effectively serve the needs of a multidisciplinary, international membership.
“It will be my privilege and pleasure to work with the newly elected leadership, in particular, the newly elected President-Elect, Dr. Douglas Blayney,” said Allen S. Lichter, MD, Chief Executive Officer of ASCO. “For over a decade, Dr. Blayney has committed his time and dedication to the Society through various volunteer and leadership positions. ASCO is fortunate to have such a highly qualified oncologist and dedicated ASCO member lead the Society’s efforts to improve cancer care and prevention.”
The newly elected leaders, who come from a variety of specialties and professional situations, described several issues and themes to be addressed during their terms in office. Among these is the need to implement the most recent advances in clinical science while also educating policymakers about the challenges posed by insufficient reimbursement and decreased funding for oncology research; advancing basic, translational, and clinical research through collaborations with public and private entities; working to improve access to clinical trials and support programs designed for cancer survivors; and developing strategies to alleviate the future shortage in the oncology workforce.
“I am honored to have been elected to serve as ASCO President, following in the very large footsteps of those who have served before me,” said Dr. Blayney. “ASCO is an exceptional organization and I look forward to working alongside my esteemed colleagues on the Board of Directors to continue improving the care and treatment of those living with cancer.”
The President-Elect and new members of the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee will be introduced during the Annual Business Meeting, to be held on Monday, June 2, in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. Members are encouraged to attend this event, where they will have the opportunity to meet the newly elected leaders and to witness the passing of the presidential gavel.
