ASCO members can now access the complete content of the 2008 ASCO Educational Book. The online edition contains 91 original articles by speakers and chairs of sessions to be held at the 2008 Annual Meeting and is fully searchable by title, category, keyword, and author name. Manuscripts from previous editions of the ASCO Educational Book are also available on ASCO.org.
Although summaries of each manuscript are accessible to all users, only ASCO members are able to read the full-text manuscripts through the ASCO.org Virtual Meeting and on the Educational Book page of ASCO.org, under the “Education and Training”. Members and pre-registered Annual Meeting attendees will receive copies of the 2008 ASCO Educational Book on CD-ROM by mail beginning in early May; attendees will receive print copies in their tote bags upon their arrival at the Annual Meeting. Copies are also available for purchase in the ASCO Bookstore.
The ASCO Educational Book provides a preview of the practice-changing and innovative science to be presented at the upcoming Annual Meeting, and prospective attendees are encouraged to use it as a resource when determining which sessions they will attend. More importantly, the ASCO Educational Book remains a valuable reference publication long after the conclusion of the Meeting.
Editor Ramaswamy Govindan, MD, of Washington University in St. Louis, hopes that the book will highlight recent innovations in oncology, and that it also will stimulate interest in further clinical science. “We keep the practicing oncologists in mind,” he continued, “and most of the articles are applicable in day-to-day practice. Others represent recent advances—they may not be immediately applicable, but they give a sense of where things in the field are going. The 2008 ASCO Educational Book keeps readers very up-to-date.”
Readers will find a number of new features in the 2008 ASCO Educational Book. This year, authors were asked to provide a bulleted list of key points at the beginning of each article, allowing readers to quickly skim and review the information presented in the text. The table of contents also has been reorganized to allow a reader to browse articles by track (to navigate the Annual Meeting) or by topic (to navigate the wealth of information), enabling busy professionals to locate articles of interest in a timely way.
The ASCO Educational Book features four online-only manuscripts, which are available to members on the Educational Book page:
- “Emerging Therapies for Non-small Cell Lung Cancer” by Paul A. Bunn, Jr., MD, Eric B. Haura, MD, and John V. Heymach, MD, PhD
- “The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway in Cancer” by Frederic J. de Sauvage, PhD, and James C. Marsters, Jr., PhD
- “Stage-specific Therapy for Esophageal Cancer: The Role of Multimodality Therapy” by Mark J. Krasna, MD, FACS
- “Targeted Therapy for the Loss of the Tumor Suppressor Gene von Hippel-Lindau through Synthetic Lethality” by Sandra Turcotte, PhD, and Amato J. Giaccia, PhD
