NIH Appropriations

The doubling of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget, accomplished between fiscal years 1999 and 2003, fueled a revolution in molecular biology. Basic research advances have unlocked the secrets to a number of diseases and stimulated the translation of basic research into disease treatments. Tremendous strides have occurred in cancer research, advances that are contributing to the development of new therapies, often for cancers where no effective treatments were previously available.  It is vital that Congress work to protect its investment in NIH by providing the largest possible enhancement in funding, building on research advances, and ensuring that cancer clinical research is adequately supported.
